lyrics

i walked into a hotel bar
somewhere up in new hampshire
thought i'd check the latest score
for finals of world cup soccer

that's what the world calls football

the tv set above the bar
showed qualifiers for nascar
i asked the bartender if he'd mind
changing the channel for a time

so i could check the score

he said
'where're you from?'
'from vermont?'

i said 'no, why'd you ask?'
feeling a little beleagured
he said 'what are you?'
'one of those ivy leaguers?'

he meant that school in Hanover

right then i didn't know what he meant
i thought i'd give him one more chance
to put on the soccer game
or at least the tour de france

he asked where I was from, i said

I'm from Massachusetts!
